Human Subjects Research

Institutional Review Board (IRB)

The Institutional Review Board (IRB) provides oversight and institutional reviews of research activities involving human subjects to ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations. Activities that fulfill coursework only without a research element do not require review.

Review Time; Approval Period

Protocols should be submitted a minimum of thirty (30) days in advance of the anticipated start date. Review times meet average national benchmarks for protocol turnaround times, as published by NYU. First-time submittees and protocols to fulfill degree requirements should allow even more time.

Initial approval is granted for a maximum of one (1) year. A Continuing Review (no change to the protocol) will need to be submitted a minimum of thirty (30) days before the expiration date to extend the approval period. An Amendment must be submitted to revise the protocol at any time, allowing a minimum of thirty (30) days for review.
